Places to visit in Shiraz in winter

Mild days, soft light and far fewer crowds — why the cold months may be the loveliest time to discover the city of poets.

Shiraz — the city of poetry, history and gardens — is a delight to visit in winter. While much of Europe shivers, southern Iran enjoys mild, pleasant days that let you explore the city's historical and natural treasures without the intense heat of summer. Add shorter queues and that famous low, golden winter light, and you have ideal conditions for sightseeing and photography. Here are the places we love most.

Persepolis

An hour from the city stands Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the ancient Achaemenid Empire and one of Iran's most iconic historical sites. Walking among its towering columns and carved reliefs on a crisp, clear winter morning — without the summer crowds or scorching sun — is genuinely unforgettable. Pair it with nearby Naqsh-e Rostam, where colossal royal tombs are cut into the cliff face.

Nasir al-Mulk — the Pink Mosque

No visit to Shiraz is complete without the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, better known as the "Pink Mosque". Arrive early on a sunny winter morning and watch the low sun pour through its stained-glass windows, scattering jewel-coloured light across the carpets. Winter's clear skies make this celebrated spectacle especially vivid.

The tomb of Hafez

Shirazis adore their poets, and the garden tomb of Hafez is the city's beating heart. Even in winter the gardens are serene and atmospheric; locals come to read verses and sip tea in the pavilion. It is the perfect place to slow down and feel the soul of the city.

Gardens, bazaars and citadels

Wrap up and wander the Eram and Delgosha gardens, where cypress and citrus stay green year-round, then warm up inside the labyrinthine Vakil Bazaar with its teahouses, spice stalls and craft shops. The Karim Khan Citadel and the Vakil Mosque complete a rich, walkable historic core.

Winter in Shiraz means soft light, quiet courtyards and the city almost to yourself.
